Marilyn Langer was a smuggler from the Landreich, serving as the Phantom's chief engineer and tail gunner under Kevin Milady. She was usually down an access passage, squatting over twin mass drivers. She is described as cruel, with a terrible fate awaiting whoever checked her out and "admiring" her rear view.
On 2634.121 the ship was in the Hallin system when they were intercepted by Vak fighters. Some Targu-class also appeared and Langer, still checking on the Vaks behind them, reported that 4 of them are still behind and closing up, possibly sporting upgraded engines. Milady made the ship to tumble to the other direction and moved towards the fighters, they came to the front and peeled off, and Marilyn let a high-pitched yell as she opened up. Kevin made another tumble to evade the frigates's firewall. As they were going towards the jump point, she warned that a Vak came up front and started shooting, winging it, and Hans finished it off as it shot past them. Then she warned that the frigates were coming about to intercept them.
When the Phantom was doing its final run for the jump point, Kevin noticed that the figates were closing on them, and ordered her to launch a nuke mine, and an empty one. She reported that one was destroyed, and the other was turning aside, avoiding the dummy mine. However it responded by launching 3 seekers, which Milady asked Marilyn to nail down. Marily sent out a spray of rounds hoping to detonate the seekers, and shouted that the first 2 seekers were passing through the chaff that Hans launched.
As the ship was gaining speed, Marilyn managed to hit the first seeker, causing the third one to go straight into its debris and detonate, as the second one maneuvered around it and continued homing it. Seconds before reaching the jump point, the seeker it suddenly leapt forward, and Marilyn shouted a warning; in the last moment she showed a remarkable talent of shooting nailing it. But it was too close already, and as the ship had no phase shields (to use the jump engine), the explosion washed into the back of the Phantom and the blast enveloped her while she cried "Got the bas-". What was left of her sprayed up into the cockpit, and the jagged opening sucked her fragments into space.[1]
