The P-64C Ferret Patrol Fighter is a Terran Confederation light fighter.
Specifications[]
The Ferret was a quick and light craft.[2] Compared to an F-54C Epee, the Ferret has less firepower[3] but is both faster and boasts about double the extremely light armor of the Epee.
Main weaponry of the Ferret was a pair of mass drivers. While not as long ranged as particle beams, the weapons are very reliable and effective. The only real complaint about the Ferret was the patrol fighter mounted no missile hard points.
History[]
Early precussors of the Ferrets were used as scout ships or "flying cameras" by exploration vessels, such as the CS Iason.[4]
Ferrets consisted the main arsenal of the solitary Caernarvon Station. Pilots Maverick and Shadow piloted Ferrets while patroling the Gwynedd system. It was during the Enigma Campaign when they first used the Ferrets in battle. They defended the TCS Concordia[5] more than once[6] and assisted an assault against a Fralthra-class[7]
In the Niven system, two Ferrets Viper 1 and 2 patrolled around the Concordia and TCS William Tell.[8] Maverick flew as a courrier at Niven[9] and on his way back he escorted two Free Trader-class transports.[10] While patrolling the vicinity of the Concordia Maverick encountered phantom fighters and upon his return his flight recorder was stolen and could not prove it.[11]
In the Heaven's Gate, Lady Blue led the Ferret wing in patrols.[15]
Later, the Confederation introduced an upgraded version of the Ferret, the "Super Ferret" in the year 2667. Improvements in this "Super Ferret" include improved flight systems and the addition of a pair of heat-seeking missiles. Even with these upgrades, the "Super Ferret" was still far less expensive to manufacture than the Epee.
