Specifications[]
It has a lot of firepower, but lacks maneuverability.[2] The Broadsword is the heaviest "fighter" in service with the Confederation military and is classified as a "Heavy Bomber". It masses in the area of 100 tons, has very durable armor, powerful shields, and three defensive turrets. These bombers have eight missile hard points with four stressed for anti-capital ship torpedoes. Unlike most smaller craft, the Broadsword bomber mounts a jump drive.
The primary weakness is the bombers overall relatively slow speed which causes the pilot to have to spend more time on the battlefield and is prone to attacks by the enemy. To compensate this weakness is is equipped with 3 dual neutron gun turrets on the sides and rear of the bomber and three forward firing mass driver cannons mounted in the bomber's nose. The turrets equipped on the bomber can also be used as a tractor beam to haul in ejected pilots or other items such as small satellites and debris.
History[]
In the Gwynedd system, Kilroy and Primetime of TCS Concordia flew Broadswords as Gold Wing in an attack against the Fralthra-class which pursued the Concordia. They were assisted by Maverick and Shadow of Caernarvon Station.[3]
In the Niven system, Maverick flew to scan jump trails of Kilrathi Capital ships.[4]
In Ghorah Khar, Alexa and Jeager in Broadswords escorted Clydesdale-class minesweeper Gunga Din. Together with Maverick and Hobbes, they proceeded to defend Olympus Station.[6]
In Novaya Kiev, Maverick and Doomsday with the assistance of Clydesdale-class tanker Valdez, attacked a Supply Depot.[7] Later, and against their orders, Maverick led Doomsday to rescue Stingray.[8] The pair then escorted Gilgamesh-class TCS Hector against a Fralthra-class and then escorted it back to the Concordia.[9] Finally, they had a mission to jump to Talbot system and assist a Free Trader-class courier. It was too late, but Maverick retrieved the vital data capsule it carried.[10]
While in Tesla system, Maverick and Angel jumped to the Enigma system in order to clear the jump point for the Concordia.[14] while there, the pair attacked the listening post Korah Pokh[15] and later a force led by a Ralatha-class. The Ralatha jumped to K'Tithrak Mang, and its destination was tracked by the pilots[16] setting the stage for the final assault.
